RHINOPLASTY

A rhinoplasty, known by most patients as a “nose job” or “nose reshaping” surgery, is a great option for individuals interested in achieving well-proportioned facial and nasal features. The majority of our patients request rhinoplasty surgeries for aesthetic enhancement purposes, but we do operate on individuals because it can tremendously improve their quality of life. For example, rhinoplasties are a common method to correct internal nasal deformities for individuals suffering from impaired breathing.

Candidates

For this procedure, minimum age is of significant importance as nasal growth should be complete prior to surgery. Therefore, adolescents and young adults are commonly the starting age group for this procedure. Most patients are primarily motivated by the prospect of a more aesthetically pleasing appearance while others are more interested in improving breathing. In addition to the age and facial developmental requirements, ideal candidates are in general good health, do not smoke and have set realistic expectations.

Rhinoplasty Frequently Asked Questions

HOW IS RHINOPLASTY ACCOMPLISHED?

Common cosmetic concerns such as a hump seen on a profile, drooping tip, a bulbous tip or asymmetries can be corrected using various surgical maneuvers performed by Dr. Burres. Changes to the structural framework inside the nose are made in order to accomplish the desired outside appearance. Internal changes can also be made to improve existing breathing complications. Dr. Burres will spend an extensive amount of time with you during your pre-operative consultation, explaining the possible maneuvers and procedures that could be performed to achieve your desired look and/or to correct an existing breathing problem.

WHERE ARE THE INCISIONS MADE FOR RHINOPLASTY?

There are two ways to access the internal structures of the nose for making aesthetic and functional improvements. The closed method is surgery performed through the nostrils and does not leave a visible scar. The open method includes an incision across the skin between the nostrils (columella). The open approach leaves a small scar but can accomplish more goals.

Those requiring simple changes such as hump removal and minor tip modification is an ideal candidate for a closed procedure. It also works well for those only requiring internal work to correct a breathing disorder. Advantages of this method include less swelling and more efficiency during surgery.

RECOVERY AND RESULTS

Patients will experience puffiness, nose ache or a dull headache, some swelling and bruising, bleeding or stuffiness after surgery. Most patients begin to feel better about 2 days after surgery and generally can return to work within a week. Results will become gradually apparent as swelling subsides and can sometimes take up to a year to achieve a final appearance. Contact lenses can be worn immediately, but it may take about 6 weeks for glasses to be comfortably worn. Patients with realistic expectations are generally very happy with the shape of their new nose and it is important to remember that exact results depend on the patient’s nasal bone and cartilage structure, facial shape, skin thickness and age.

REVISIONAL SURGERY

Some patients may experience deformities caused by a previous operation. In this case, revision or secondary rhinoplasty can be done to correct these abnormalities. It can be considered a more difficult procedure to perform than a primary rhinoplasty as scaring may be more prevalent and there is less cartilage to work with.

The information about rhinoplasty was reviewed by Dr. Steven Burres. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us using our contact form below.

FACELIFT

Facelifts are a wonderful way to counteract common signs of aging and give you a fresher more youthful look. By tightening muscle, removing fat, and trimming excess skin, Dr. Burres can help give you back the look that you once had. After surgery, some patients look 10-15 years younger.

Mid-face sagging, deep creases under the eyes, deep creases between the nose and mouth, loose skin and fat under the chin and jaw are some of the ageing issues a facelift can help correct.

Although facelifts can produce a dramatic improvement in appearance, it is important for patients to understand that facelifts do not stop the aging process. In time, signs of aging will gradually appear once again. Further, facelifts will not rejuvenate the brow, eyelids, nose, and some of the mid-face. Patients who want to improve these areas may consider combining a facelift with a brow lift or eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). Fat grafting, injectable soft-tissue fillers, facial implants and skin resurfacing can also enhance the effects of a facelift.

Candidates

The ideal candidates for a facelift are men and women who are in general good health, whose faces have begun to sag, but whose skin still has some elasticity. A true understanding of the desired results with realistic expectations is also important.

Recovery Time

Swelling, numbness, bruising, and a feeling of tightness or tension in the face and neck is common post-surgery and may last from 2-4 weeks. Your face may look uneven or distorted, and your facial muscles may feel stiff. Facial sensations typically return to normal within a few months.

Most patients are considered “socially acceptable” after about 10 days and many return to work by the second or third week. Dr. Burres and his staff will carefully review post-surgery care instructions with you to ensure your recovery is as smooth as possible.

NECK LIFT

A neck lift concentrates on jowls, loose skin on the neck, and fat under the chin. The incision is made around the ear lobe and behind the ear to the lower scalp.

In all three methods, incisions are closed with stitches. Scars are hidden in the hairline and natural contours and creases of the face.

UPPER/LOWER EYELID LIFT (BLEPHAROPLASTY)

As we get older, the natural ageing process can significantly affect the delicate skin and muscles around the eyes. Aesthetic eyelid surgery is a remarkable way to restore a fresh, more youthful appearance to the upper face. Dr. Burres will take great care to achieve a less tired look without changing the natural expression or shape of your eyes and face.

Dr. Burres regularly performs blepharoplasty to correct one or more of the following conditions:

  • Wrinkles around the eye area
  • Drooping lower lids
  • Sagging upper eyelids
  • Puffy eyelids (Excess fat deposits)

Procedure

Eyelid surgery is performed under general anesthesia in our on-site surgical center and takes about 3-4 hours to complete. Each patient’s unique condition will determine whether both the upper and lower lids need improvement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is a candidate for eyelid surgery?

Both Men and Women with complaints of a wrinkled upper eyelid skin and/or bags and circles under the eyes are ideal candidates. Sometimes they also have loose or darkened skin in the troubled areas. Most women become candidates for eyelid surgery in their early forties and men about ten years later. All of these issues can usually be effectively addressed by surgery. Also, the ideal candidate must be free of any serious eye condition and a non-smoker.

Do I need both my upper and lower eyelids done?

It depends on the individual. Older patients usually exhibit ageing changing on both the upper and lower eyelids warranting a combined procedure. Early candidates for upper eyelid surgery frequently do not need their lower eyelids done at the same time. Young individuals without upper eyelid aging changes that have hereditary lower eyelid bags and circles will benefit from lower eyelid surgery alone.

Where are the incisions used in eyelid surgery?

Upper eyelid incisions are made within the natural eyelid crease. Scars are typically very subtle after healing is complete. For a lower eyelid surgery that just involves fat bag treatment, an incision at the site is not necessary. The fat is accessed through an incision on the inside of the eyelid. If there is loose lower eyelid skin, then an incision just under the eyelashes is used to tighten it. This incision also heals extremely well and is eventually difficult to detect.

Recovery

Swelling and pain associated with the procedure will diminish over the next few days after surgery. Most patients return to work about a week after surgery, however strenuous activity should be avoided for at least two weeks post- surgery.

Results

The final look of your refreshed, younger looking face will gradually become more evident over time; however, the overall effects of the surgery are expected to last for years. In order to maintain long-term results proper precautions are recommended such as protecting your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays by wearing sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Dr. Burres will be sure to go over all the necessary precautions with you in order to ensure optimal, long-lasting results.

LIP LIFT

Your lips are one of your most sensual and delicate facial features. Their appearance define how we are perceived and contribute to our communications. Don’t trust them to just any plastic surgeon!

Whether you are born with smaller lips than you want, or you have lost your full pout over time, lip lift surgery is a long-lasting way to restore the youthful and proportionate appearance of the lips. When you treat the lips, it can impact the entire balance of the face. Lip lifts are outpatient procedures that typically take just an hour or two to complete and involve a relatively short recovery process. The results can be both dramatic and long-lasting. Dr. Burres offers customizable lip rejuvenation at his office, offering his patients an effective way to refresh their looks and restore their confidence.

A lip lift is a surgical procedure that raises the position of the upper lip. The surgery can also add fullness like a dermal filler or fat transfer, but at the same time, it enhances the actual shape and definition of the lip. As the lip is lifted, the distance between the nose and upper lip is also shortened. This effect can be very aesthetically pleasing for some patients and another advantage of choosing surgery over injectable treatments.

Dr. Burres offers different techniques for his lip lift, depending on your goals. If you want to enhance your cupid’s bow, the lift will focus on the center portion of the upper lip. If a perpetual frown is your concern, Dr. Burres can also use this surgery to correct downturned corners of the mouth.

Is a Lip Lift Right for You?

If you are dissatisfied with the way your lips look, or if you have noticed changes to your lips over time, a lip lift might be the right choice for you. Patients tend to benefit from lip lifts most if they have any of the following goals:

  • Increase lip size or add volume and fullness to the lips
  • Hide significant gaps between the bottom of the nose and the upper lip
  • Reduce signs of aging around the lips and mouth
  • Desire a more proportionate smile and balance to the facial features

If you are considering a lip lift, now is the time to schedule a consultation with Dr. Burres. He will ask you about your issues and goals in detail to determine whether a lip lift will be the best option for you.

Who is the Best Surgeon for You?

A lip lift may seem like a simple, straightforward procedure that any plastic surgeon can perform. However, to ensure a natural, proportionate result, you want to be sure you work with a surgeon that has extensive experience in lip lift techniques. Dr. Burres will take the time to understand your precise goals so that he can tailor your procedure to your exact expectations. With ample experience and a variety of techniques to draw from, Dr. Burres offers the highest standard of care and the best possible results.

Lip Lift Overview

Dr. Burres performs lip lifts in his office under local anesthesia. He places a tiny incision just under the base of the nose, taking care to position the incision so residual scarring will be minimal. Through this incision, a small section of skin is removed, and the upper lip line is raised to expose a portion of the upper teeth and create a fuller pink part to the lip.

If the goal is to address a downturned mouth, incisions will be placed at each corner. Dr. Burres removes a narrow wedge of skin while releasing the DAO muscle. These steps prevent the corners from automatically turning down. Most lip lifts take about one to two hours to complete. You will be able to head home shortly after your procedure.

After Your Lift Lip

The sensitive area of the mouth is prone to swelling and possibly bruising after a lip lift. You will be instructed to use ice packs and pain relievers for the first few days to keep you comfortable during the early part of your recovery. It is also helpful to keep your head elevated when sleeping at night to minimize swelling.

Dr. Burres will meet with you once a week for six weeks. During the first two appointments, he will remove your stitches and replace them with tape. After the taping period, you will use a patented silicone scar gel twice a day for three months to continue the healing process and minimize your postoperative scarring. Dr. Burres will also provide you with specific instructions for your recovery based on your particular situation.

Fuller Lips Turn Back Time

When your lips are rejuvenated, your entire appearance can be refreshed and enhanced. A lip lift offers long-lasting results with minimal discomfort and downtime involved. The procedure can be customized to your precise needs for a truly natural, beautiful look.

EAR SURGERY (OTOPLASTY) EAR PINNING

Prominent ears can disrupt the natural balance of the face and attract unwanted attention, including teasing and bullying. Often people who have protruding ears suffer from self-consciousness and low self-esteem. Dr. Burres performs ear shaping surgery, technically called otoplasty to improve the appearance and position of the ears.

Candidates

Otoplasty is most beneficial for children, usually between the ages of 5 and 14 years, to minimize the emotional impact caused by teasing and self-consciousness. However, adults of any age can improve their appearance and self-image as well. Teenagers and adults who have had undesirable ear piercings my also undergo otoplasty to correct the deformity and restore the ear lobe to its natural form.

During the consultation, Dr. Burres will examine the ears and evaluate how they conform with the rest of the facial features. While choosing elective surgery can be a difficult decision for parents to make, it’s important to consider the emotional well-being of the child as he or she matures. Dr. Burres designs the otoplasty procedure to the patient’s individual needs. It can be used to position the ears closer in, reduce their size, recreate natural folds of the cartilage and enhance the ears’ shape.

Procedure

Otoplasty is typically performed in an outpatient setting. Children often require general anesthesia, while local anesthesia with or without sedation can be used for teens and adults. Dr. Burres usually completes the surgery within 2 hours. Incisions are concealed behind the ears and along the natural contours of the ear to minimize the appearance of scars.

Recovery

Otoplasty requires little downtime allowing most patients return to their regular routine quickly. Patients are required to wear protective bandages nonstop for a week during initial healing and during the following month at night or during sports. Adults can return to normal activities, including work, within 2 days in most cases.

(FACE) CHEEK/CHIN IMPLANT

The chin is not a feature you necessarily think about, but when the chin is weak or underdeveloped, it can throw the entire proportion of the face off kilter. A weak chin may add prominence to the nose or forehead, or affect the definition of the whole jawline. Fortunately, there are ways to augment the chin to create a more attractive facial profile and balance your features beautifully.

Chin enhancement surgery, usually referred to as chin augmentation or genioplasty, is typically performed to sharpen facial features and create more defined contours around the neck and jowls. While it is a practical solution when performed alone, it can also be combined with other surgeries such as rhinoplasty, a facelift or neck shaping to enhance the proportions of the face further. Dr. Burres has performed many chin implant surgeries and will listen to your aesthetic goals before recommending the best treatment plan for you.

What are Chin Implants?

A chin implant is a biocompatible device designed to simulate the shape and size of a well-proportioned chin. Most implants are silicone, although there are some other material options as well. Dr. Burres prefers the soft, natural feel of the silicone implant for nearly all his patients, believing it gives them the most natural results. The implant is placed underneath the skin and soft tissue, on top of the lower jaw bone to ensure the stability of the device.

Chin implants typically offer long-lasting results. As long as you continue to like your new facial profile and you don’t experience any complications after surgery, there is no reason to remove the implants at any time. Different shape options are available, which allow him to tailor your procedure to your desired outcome and the proportions of the rest of your facial features.

Is a Chin Implant Right for You?

If you would like to correct your recessed or “weak” chin to achieve better facial symmetry, chin implants surgery can help you feel more confident in your appearance. Specifically, chin implant surgery can be ideal for patients who want to:

  • Increase their facial proportions by creating a more natural ration between their chin size and their other facial features
  • Augment a weak or recessed chin to strengthen the facial profile
  • Sharpen the neck or jawline for a more defined look
  • Minimize the full or “double” chin effect often caused by a small chin bone

Chin augmentation is highly effective for the right patient, but it is not appropriate for everyone. Dr. Burres takes time at your initial consultation to understand your concerns, listen to your aesthetic goals and evaluate both your medical history and your current health condition to determine whether chin implant surgery is the right step for you.

Benefits of a Chin Implant

A chin implant offers numerous benefits to the right patient:

  • Enhance the facial profile by increasing the projection of the lower face.
  • Camouflage early jowl formation for a more youthful appearance.
  • Increase the width of the lower face by widening the chin.
  • Lengthen the face by increasing the vertical chin height.
  • Diminish the appearance of dimpling often caused by a loose chin.
  • Create balance, symmetry and proportion to the entire face

Chin Implant Overview Dr. Burres will perform your chin augmentation using local anesthesia. The choice may depend on your preference, as well as the extent of the correction you require. If you opt to have additional procedures at the same time as your chin enhancement, you may need to have general anesthesia, so you are comfortably asleep throughout the process.

Once the anesthesia is administered, Dr. Burres creates a small incision either underneath the chin or inside the mouth. You can rest assured the no matter which location is chosen; the residual scarring will be nearly undetectable after your procedure. Using this opening, he will place a small silicone implant around your existing chin bone to augment its size and shape, creating a more naturally attractive jawline. He will meticulously stitch the incision closed using layering techniques that promote quick healing and place a bandage over the area. Most chin surgeries take an hour or less to complete, and you will go home shortly after your procedure. However, if you have an additional procedure, operating time could increase accordingly.

After Your Chin Implant Surgery

You may be a bit sore and swollen after your surgery for a few days. Dr. Burres will prescribe pain medication, and you may also have antibiotics to take after surgery to prevent post-operative infection. Dr. Burres will advise you to take about two weeks after chin surgery to rest and recover. He will see you for follow-up visits during this time to ensure your healing is progressing normally. While the general rule for patients is to resume regular activity within two weeks, Dr. Burres will provide you with a personalized recovery plan as he monitors you after your surgery.

LIPOSUCTION

 What is Liposuction?

One of the most popular cosmetic procedures, Liposuction contours specific areas of the body by removing localized fat deposits resulting in a slimmer, more balanced look. And while it doesn’t replace traditional dieting and exercise, it can remove stubborn areas of fat that do not respond to traditional weight loss methods. Recent medical advancements, new technologies and improved techniques have vastly improved surgical outcomes and the amount of pain commonly associated with liposuction procedures. Dr. Burres has extensive experience in performing liposuction and is well-versed in the latest techniques and safety guidelines.

Is Liposuction Right for You?

The ideal candidate for liposuction is in good overall health and maintains a healthy lifestyle but has one or more problem areas with unresponsive fat deposits. It is important for patients to remember that liposuction cannot be used as a means for substantial weight loss. It is instead used to remove excess fat in localized areas after the patient has attempted other traditional weight loss methods.

Common treatment areas for liposuction include:

  • Thighs and Knees
  • Abdomen and Flanks
  • Arms
  • Back
  • Hips
  • Neck
  • Buttocks
  • Chest
  • Face and Neck
  • Calves
  • Ankles

Additionally, liposuction is often combined with other cosmetic procedures, such as a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), a fat transfer to the breasts.

Benefits of Liposuction

More than simply removing stubborn fat, the benefits of liposuction include:

  • Enhancing and contouring your body by reducing fatty areas problem areas
  • Reducing or removing lipomas: benign fatty tumors in certain areas of the body
  • Treating gynecomastia: excessive amounts of breast tissue in men by removing the fatty deposits
  • Treating lipodystrophy syndrome: a fat metabolism disturbance that causes excessive fat in some areas of the body.

Preparing for Your Procedure

To help prepare you for liposuction and reduce any risks associated with any surgery, Dr. Burres will give you a list of instructions that will ensure your safety and the success of your procedure. That list might include:

  • Stop smoking before any surgery, since nicotine can interfere with your body’s ability to heal and possibly increase anesthesia-related complications.
  • Stop taking medications that could exacerbate bleeding during and after surgery, including blood-thinners, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories and aspirin.
  • Talk to Dr. Burres about supplements you might be taking, such as St. John’s wort, vitamin E or fish oil, since these substances can also increase bleeding risks.
  • Take enough time off work to recuperate and line up help with your house, children and pets so you can devote yourself entirely to the recovery process.
  • Fill prescriptions before your surgery, so they are ready for you to take as soon as you get home.

Dr. Burres may give you additional instructions based on your unique situation, and it’s imperative that you follow any and all directions carefully to prepare yourself for your procedure and ensure a positive, successful treatment experience.

After Liposuction: Recovery and Results

The most common side effects of liposuction include mild swelling, bruising and discomfort in the treated area. Compression garments or elastic bandages can be used to help reduce these symptoms while healing takes place. Patients usually can return to work and regular activities within a few days, but strenuous activities like exercise should be avoided for a few weeks. Dr. Burres will give you special instructions on how to care for your treated area and reduce any complications after the procedure.

As long as you maintain a healthy, active lifestyle, your liposuction surgery results can be permanent. However, significant weight after liposuction can alter your results. You can expect to see results gradually as you heal and as your swelling and bruising subside. Keep in mind that healing is a process, and it could take several months for your full results to be seen.

LIP AUGMENTATION W/ IMPLANT

The Lip Implant procedure is one treatment option for those seeking permanent lip enhancement. The procedure is performed in-office, takes under 1 hour to perform, and utilizes a soft, natural-feeling implant which is FDA-cleared for facial implantation. Kissing partner cannot feel the implant.

MINI TUMMYTUCK

It’s inevitable for the stomach to change over time—even with regular exercise and a healthy diet. It doesn’t matter if you are a man or a woman, skin laxity and stubborn fat deposits will begin to form for many reasons, including aging, genetics, motherhood, and lifestyle changes, to name a few.

For some women, you’re even more susceptible to body changes post-pregnancy, since stretching of the muscles and ligaments to accommodate a growing child challenges the body. However, for a fortunate few, these changes may not require substantial corrections in the tummy area; getting rid of the unsightly loose skin and bulges that have you dissatisfied with your midsection and wishing for the body you had before the baby is common.

Mini Tummy Tuck Overview

Dr. Burres will perform a partial tummy tuck or mini tummy tuck, which involves a single incision, for patients needing minimal correction. A mini tummy tuck also uses a shortened incision and is less invasive overall, meaning you can get the correction you want with a faster, more comfortable recovery process in many cases. In contrast, a full tummy tuck involves the entire abdominal area resulting in a profoundly dramatic outcome. It requires two incisions ending with a more extensive scar, plus involving the encircling of the navel.

This procedure is excellent for patients who require less contouring to the body than what a full tummy tuck offers and can be a good option for you if you:

  • Have a little bit of loose or sagging skin below your belly button.
  • Individuals retaining excess fat and skin despite a regular diet and exercise schedule.
  • Women experiencing stretched skin and separated abdominal muscles after pregnancy.

Candidates for any surgical procedure should be in good health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about the results. Because weight fluctuations can affect the quality of your results, Dr. Burres recommends patients pursue plastic surgery after completing a healthy weight loss regimen.

Benefits of a Mini Tummy Tuck

Although the mini tummy tuck offers a less dramatic outcome, the benefits are impactful for the right patients needing to remove a smaller amount of skin. It also has less discomfort, a tinier scar, and shorter downtime. Rewards include:

  • Elimination of mild to moderate loose skin around the middle
  • Reduction in isolated fat areas (usually via liposuction)
  • Correction of mild separation of abdominal muscles
  • Creation of a flatter, smoother midsection

Recovering After Your Mini Tummy Tuck

Mini tummy tuck recovery can take approximately two weeks. For the first few days, the stomach will be sore and swollen because you just had surgery on your abdominal muscles. Limiting movement as much as possible will allow your body to heal. Sleeping in an upright position will also help to eliminate any tension around your midsection. In about a week, you will be able to resume your regular daily activities.

During the first six weeks, refrain from vigorous exercise. You will continue to experience swelling; however, it will slowly dissipate as time passes, revealing your ultimate results. Once you’re feeling better, begin to incorporate short walks to circulate your blood and consider returning to work and other daily routines.
